Glenfinnan Viaduct

Glenfinnan Viaduct

Captured on a Staycation, Glenfinnan Viaduct has now become one of Scotland's most popular sites.

Glenfinnan Viaduct

This was captured during a staycation in the middle of Covid 2020. My Wife and I had booked an Airbnb in Glenfinnan and the very first thing we did was go and explore the Viaduct. We were only a 10 minute walk away and I knew I had no say in our first activity. My Wife is a huge Harry Potter fan and practically sprinted along the road to start exploring.

I do have to admit that it is an amazing piece of architecture that nestles so well into the hills around it. We spent about half an hour exploring underneath the Viaduct and the small bit of countryside around. There is a lovely little river and rock running nearby, a spot I actually thought at the time I might propose at in the future (we were not married yet.). However, that story is even more epic and features in another artwork story.

After walking underneath the Viaduct there is a viewpoint to walk up and where I captured the image that has been turned into our Artwork. As someone who climbs Munro's this is a very simple 10 minute climb. My wife who does zero hiking had another view and this is where the day got slightly less romantic.

We began the short climb and within a few minutes my wife's mood had changed from excitement to sheer rage! I am sure almost every couple has experienced this where someone does not enjoy all the activities and is dragged along. This short walk quickly turned into a silent adventure with the occasional snippy comment coming from... well one of us! Eventually, we reached the viewpoint and my wife suddenly became the excited child again looking down on the Viaduct.

We unfortunately did not see the Hogwarts Express however it was a magical couple of hours! I did plan on continuing the walk over the hill to the viewpoint of Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument but decided against it for.. obvious reasons!

This is a great afternoon out, with a paid carpark to the Viaduct. but also right across the road is Loch Shiel with breath taking views and some boardwalks to be explored!
