Loch Na Cuilce
Captured on a boat trip to Loch Coruisk, where I proposed.
This is obviously one of the best days of my life. An epic, terrifying and joyous trip.
We had taken a trip up to the Isle of Skye and were staying close to the North of the Island. We were on our second day and I had arranged a boat trip to Loch Coruisk, a loch only accessible by boat or a full day hike. This began with a drive down to Elgol at the south east of the island to await our boat. This small village is a beautiful spot and provides a great view to the Black Cuillin Mountain range, the most challenging in the UK & something on my bucket list.
We were part of a small party that boarded our boat to take us across the Sea Loch towards Loch Coruisk, nestled at the foot of the Black Cuillins. The clouds began to clear and this half hour boat ride was amazing. We had some amazing views of the mountains that I can only liken to something out of Jurassic Park. We were blessed with a stunning day. It was like it was all meant to be.
As we came closer Loch Na Cuilce, the bay just next to Loch Coruisk, we saw a family of seals sunbathing on the rocks close to the shore. The whole boat became extremely excited to see them, clamouring to take pictures. They were beyond indifferent and went about their sunbathing as if they knew they were the celebrities. We sailed into the bay and the sea turned into a stunning green, something out of a fairytale. I knew this was going to be a special day.
We pulled into a small jetty and were then free to explore the loch. After a short walk we reached a viewpoint where the image in the artwork is taken.
At this point I was close to panic. I am sure those that have ever proposed felt something similar. I was very confident of the answer but was extremely nervous, which really took away from me enjoying the view that greeted us.
I do not have the vocabulary to describe how amazing this place is but it really is a must for anyone visiting Skye. But I could not enjoy the view until I had asked the question... We found a spot and I eventually plucked up the courage to ask my now wife if she would marry me. after some shock it was a quick yes, the rest is now history.
We spent the next hour wandering the shores of the loch, watching the other passengers swim & take in the stunning views. Whilst this place obviously holds a special place in my heart, its also an incredible place displaying the true beauty & adventure that Scotland has to offer.
We made our trip back to Elgol and spent the evening swimming in some pools close to a loch, a location I won't divulge for now! A magical day in an equally magical setting. Scotland really pulled out all the stops for this day.
