Stob Gabhar Waterfall

A really great day out with my Dad and Brother. We set off to take in a challenging circuit close to Bridge of Orchy, taking in two Munros Stob Gabhar and Stob a'Choire. These two peaks are extremely enjoyable, however the 17km circuit and about 1300 metres of height gain make it a challenging day. Not for your first Munro I would suggest.

However, if you want to visit the waterfall just search the route if these Munro’s, park at the suggested car park (free) and walk the reverse. This is still around four Kilometres with some height gain but considerably easier.

The story at the heart of this artwork though, is around the waterfall on the way back from the second peak. We had initially seen a glimpse of a huge waterfall cascading off the side of the mountain on our approach, however quickly lost sight of it. We then forgot about it for most of the walk, mainly due to trying to gasp in air. Possibly not peak fitness for any of us.

We were making our way back from the second peak and began to notice a spring coming off the mountain. We stopped, took a drink and filled our water bottes. A side note if you have never taken a drink from a mountain spring, there's nothing quite like it.

The path back followed the spring and it was at this point we remembered the waterfall we had spotted earlier and began to get excited. Checking our maps we realised we would be descending right next to the waterfall. Even at this stage we didn't know how amazing this spot would be.

As we descended the spring started to widen and we could start to hear the water cascading close by. Eventually we came to the top of the falls and looked down over the dizzying drop. I did not dare take a picture at the same time of leaning over.

We quickly descended further in anticipation, getting a side shot of the falls as we went. However we realised this was only the appetiser, the short drop before the full waterfall.

After five minutes of a tricky descent we eventually reached the pinnacle that we had been excited about. This is where the image used for our Artwork was captured.

Whilst these two Munros are a great hike, the waterfall stole the show for me and has made this one of the most memorable days walking I have had. I also feel privileged to have shared this with my Dad and Brother.
